RECIFE, Brazil (AP) -Sport Recife claimed the Brazilian Cup, and a place in next season’s Copa Libertadores, by beating Corinthians 2-0 in the second leg of the final on Wednesday, winning on the away goals rule.
Sport, chasing a 3-1 deficit from the first leg, playing aggressively and dominated possession in the first half, but had to wait until the 35th minute to score through diminutive striker Carlinhos Bala.
Just three minutes later, Sport had its second as widened its lead as Luciano Henrique knocked a shot through the legs of Corinthians’ goalkeeper Felipe.
That leveled the tie 3-3 on aggregate, with Sport holding the advantage thanks to its away goal in the first leg.
Corinthians missed a handful of shots on goal, and the Sao Paulo club was reduced to ten men in the 71st minute when defender Wellington Saci was sent off for stomping on Carlinhos Bala’s calf after both tumbled out of bounds.
With hope of an equalizer fading, Corinthians went down to nine men as defender William was red carded for butting a Sport player in the mouth.
Sport, from the northeastern city of Recife, had only reached the Brazilian Cup final once before, losing the inaugural 1989 decider to Gremio.
